What Did Your First “Palace” Look Like?

Like many people, I was swept up in wedding fever last week. I always love weddings — the anticipation of seeing the bride’s dress, the flowers, the music, the hope for the future — and last week’s royal wedding was no exception. I thought everything about it was beautiful. I loved Kate’s classic dress, and Pippa’s bridesmaid dress was stunning. (Of course those two sisters could wear almost anything and look fantastic.)

I hope that as they begin their life together, the future King and his bride will have a chance to get to know one another as husband and wife in the relative obscurity of Wales before they have to take on their more public duties. I also hope that the joy they felt on their wedding day will help sustain them through the inevitable ups and downs of marriage, and especially the pressures they will face as the press and public scramble to see their every move.
I wonder if they will be given the time to fix up their cottage in Wales just as I did when I was first married nearly 20 years ago? I loved adding feminine touches to my husband’s very sparse looking bachelor pad, and then later redecorating our first house together:
Our First Home
A few years later we braved the trauma of putting up border print wallpaper (don’t judge me too harshly — it was was 1993 after all) in the nursery for our first child:
Then, a few years later, we updated a second room for our toddler to move into with his “big boy bed” in preparation for the arrival of his younger brother:
I was eight months pregnant with our second child when I stencilled the lighthouses and sailboats on those walls!
When we moved back to the North Shore, we once again launched into redecorating and so it goes.
We all have transitions in our lives — marriages, births, deaths, separations, children moving out (or back in) etc., and it is often these transitions that bring about a desire to make changes in our homes.
If a transition in your life is making you think about redecorating your space, call Embellished Interiors for a consultation.
And William and Kate, if you need help with the cottage (or your future Palace) give me a call!
